Extraction Methods of CBD Oil

There are quite a few extraction methods of CBD from the hemp plant to attain a high-quality oil. The three most effective ones are

  • The Use of Solvents
  • CO2 Gas Extraction method
  • Using Carrier Oil

You have high chances of attaining a concentrated solution with the first two options. However, both of these methods are not exactly suitable for making CBD oil at home and require extra precaution and care. While CO2 Extraction yield the best results out of all three, it requires expensive equipment and yields less CBD than other extraction methods. This leaves us with the third option. It is the safest and the cheapest one for you to prepare CBD oil at home.

If you still want to consider the best option out of the three, you need to figure out why you are extracting the oil. Each extraction method comes with certain pros and cons that need weighing and careful consideration before selecting a method.

How to make CBD Oil by using Carrier Oil?

Oils that are considered best for extracting CBD are Olive Oil or Coconut Oil. For this 3-step CBD Oil DIY recipe, we will be using coconut oil. Ideally, the ingredients should be raw and organic. Remember, to make the final product potent, you need your basic ingredients to be pure. You also need to ensure that you have the right apparatus to prepare CBD Oil at home.

Here’s the list of supplies you will need for the process:

– Gas or Bunsen burner

– Double boiler

– Thermometer

– Odorless cloth or kitchen paper

– Cheesecloth and strainer

– Glass bowl

– Airtight container

Before we head to the preparation process, keep in mind that the heat level is critical during the process and should remain under 200 degrees Fahrenheit. You can use the thermometer to ensure the heat density throughout the process.

The first step is the decarboxylation process. In it, we will be activating the main compound of the plant by heating it at an accurate heat density. To do this, you have to preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Then lay down the carefully taken Hemp Flower petals on a baking sheet and bake them for approximately 27 minutes.

The second step requires the use of a double boiler and burner. Fill the lower level of the boiler with water and the upper one with 1 cup coconut oil. Place it on the burner and wait for it to melt gradually. Once it is melted, add your flower petals to the oil and allow it to heat gently for one hour. You can stir the mixture occasionally. This process of releasing our main component into the carrier oil is called infusion.

The third and final step is extracting the oil. You will need to strain the hot mixture in the glass bowl with the help of a strainer and cheesecloth. Allow the oil to drain completely (it can take a few minutes). Once it’s done, pour it into an airtight container, and you are good to go.

Determine the correct Dosage and Durability of Your Oil

Remember that the shelf life of your homemade product may be limited. It is best to use the oil within two days for the best results. The quantity of dosage, however, depends on the concentration and body type.

For the first go, take a small quantity of the oil and rub it on the affected area to test its compatibility and efficiency. Increase the amount to a significant ratio with each application until you achieve desired results. Once you are successful in figuring out the right dosage of product to use and its durability, you can note it down for further guidance.

*CAUTION: If you haven’t been taking CBD oils before and trying the homemade one for the first time, it is recommended to check your compatibility with each ingredient before it is used to avoid any dangerous or unforeseen mishaps. Keep an allergy shot at your disposal in case of emergencies.

Why Should We Extract Homemade CBD Oil?

While many companies out there are extracting CBD oil and doing the hard work for us, you cannot always trust them all. Besides the trust issues, you can also rid yourself of all the preservatives or chemicals used in the market products to increase shelf life. Moreover, it is a nice way to experiment with making your own CBD oil. Once you have mastered the art of making perfect oil, you can save yourself some money flowing out to buy those products.

How Should We Consume our Homemade CBD Oil?

Ideal way to consume your homemade oil should is when it is raw. Heating it further by cooking can kill the main compound’s effectiveness. For its full potency, you can either use it in your salads with baked edibles or place a few drops under your tongue. If you prefer the product’s external use, you can apply it topically by mixing it with a cream or lotion.
